MOBIE launch home design challenge for Colleges Week 2023
MOBIE is launching a short design challenge for colleges as part of Colleges Week 2023 . The challenge, in partnership with Association of Colleges and Pearson , is asking you to design a sustainable home and community of the future.
We are asking you, 'What do you want from the homes and communities of the future?'. As our future designers, creators, planners and builders of homes we want you to consider the issues and present some solutions to our housing challenges.
The challenge is an opportunity to begin thinking about re-shaping modern housing and to show us the sort of home design that you might want for yourself and your future families. Taking part can help prepare you for assignments and projects that you will be working on in your course modules and units. The Hackathon is open to all colleges and is suitable for design, environmental and construction related disciplines.
Working alone or in groups, we want you to consider the following questions:
1. What do you want from a future home in your town, city or countryside? How do you think you will be living in the future? What will be your needs and lifestyles, and how will a future home meet them? For example, will you be living in a small family, a multigenerational one, or as a group in a shared communal home?
2. How can we design homes that are future-proofed, flexible and adaptable enough for changing needs, lifestyles, economies, environment and technologies?
3. What type of construction and materials should you use? How can we make the future home energy efficient, sustainable, with minimum waste and use of scarce resources?
4. How can we include green spaces and provide areas for nature, to create a sense of community and encourage health and wellbeing for the people who will live there?
Future homes must not just be pretty buildings that celebrate modern construction, but a series of spaces that have meaning and heart. Home isn’t just where you live, it is how you live. Home is always about people.
The challenge opens on Monday 9th October and closes on Monday 23rd October. Please submit your design ideas and presentations digitally to home@mobie.org.uk. An A4 version of this brief can be requested from the same e-mail address.
A winner will be selected by MOBIE and announced on Monday 30th October 2023 along with two runners-up and any highly commended entries.
You can submit your ideas and solutions in whatever visual medium you prefer - Concept Boards, Drawings (hand or CAD), Models or Videos. You should include a short description of your home and why you chose the design and features in your entry. Please title your email ‘Colleges Week Home Hackathon Challenge’ and include your full name, tutor’s name, college name and an email address.
